Video documentation and press
Short demo of grove - Aubrey Perkins exploring the grove section. This deme gives you a chance to hear some of the sounds in the grove - there are many, so more time or multiple returns to the space will always bring different sound.
Short demo of loop de loop section - Aubrey Perkins exploring the loop de loop. Here you hear one of the 30+ stories, songs and facts that play on the loop de loop. They change every 5 minutes so multiple returns to the piece will always bring different sound.

Description
"Orange We..." is an interactive sound installation for children and adults. Sound is triggered and altered by visitors unique gestures as they climb, swing, run, explore, creating an always-different mix of rhythmic sounds. Sounds were recorded in orange groves and packing houses, sounds of workers at work, machines, bits of interviews about labor, agricultural life, sounds of orange-eating, woven together with sung and read facts taken from the long cultural histories of the orange.

The first section, the grove, offers sounds from the real lives of the people, places and machines that bring oranges to market. The database of sounds is large so that no visitor will hear the same thing as another.

The second section, the loop de loop, offers all text-based sound: voices reading and singing tales from orange-centric political and economic histories and cultural practices across many centuries of human-orange exchange. The sound in the loop de loop changes every 5 minutes, allowing visitors who stay or return to hear many of the 30 (and still growing list) orange tales it holds.

This piece is meant to encourage physical exploration and new movements - as a former dancer I'm really interested in how critical movement and sound are in shaping our thoughts. This kind of gestural micro-performance/training is really important to think about as technology increasingly tracks and shapes how we move.

Collaborators:
Technical collaborators: Marius Schebella and Jinku Kim

Improvisational singing: Carolyn Pennypacker Riggs

Spoken texts: Lizz Carter, Christopher Tegliafera, workers in the orange groves of Pauma Valley and the Sunkist Filmore Packing Plant, among others

Text for the short songs come from multiple sources, including John McPhee's magical book Oranges.

And more thanks than I can ever give for the endless generosity of Pierre Galaud, Matt Bradley and all the staff at The New Children's Museum
